What’s Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing in lay man’s term is when you promote a product owned by another person and the person pays you a percentage of the product sales price. All you need to do as an affiliate marketer is to drive traffic to the product. You keep directing people to the product.

Why choose affiliate marketing?

If you’re someone like me that prefers working from home and doesn’t want to do something too technical, then you may want to give affiliate marketing a chance.

Affiliate Marketing Platforms

Why do you need an affiliate marketing platform?

Remember your job as an affiliate marketer is to promote another person’s product. Now! The question you should be asking is where can I find these products and the original seller?

That’s where an affiliate marketing platform comes in. Two of the top affiliate marketing platforms in Africa are Expertnaire.com and stakecut.com.

How to start affiliate marketing in Nigeria with no money is by signing up on stakecut as an affiliate. Because stakecut is the only platform that doesn’t require registration fee for both affiliate and vendor. I’ll also show you how to register on expertnaire.

Once you register on stakecut, you’ll get access to different products that you can promote. Each product has a unique affiliate link and when you direct someone to the link and the person clicks the link, and eventually pays for the product, you’ll get paid a commission usually 15% – 60%.

Now let’s get started by creating an account on stakecut. Why stakecut? Read about stakecut review and why it’s better than digitstem and others here.

How to register on stakecut

1. Visit app.stakecut.com and click the sign up link to create an account or if you already have an account, just insert your details and click the sign in button.

2. Now on the sign up page, fill in your names, your personal email and whatever password you’d liked to use. Keep your password saved.

3. After you have submitted your details for registration and clicked the sign up with email button. You’ll be taken to your dashboard. And below is what it looks like:

On this page, we have total earnings as $0 and zero number of sales. So how do we start making sales and earning. Firstly, you have to know that $1 equals N1,200 on stakecut.

Now, for us to start earning, all we need to do as an affiliate marketer is to go to the marketplace section of this platform. You can find that here. You’ll see different products that you can promote in the marketplace.

Finding your product or niche as an affiliate marketer

How do you find the perfect product to sell or promote as an affiliate marketer?

Here are the Top 5 ways to find the perfect product to sell or promote.

1. Conduct a market research i.e researching what product is selling most and what it deals with. We are going to implement that together.
2. Pick the Top 5 or 10 products on the affiliate marketing platform (stakecut in this case)
3. Pick a product among the 10 probably the fifth product on the list. Because you don’t want to pick 1 to avoid saturation or 10 to avoid low sales.
4. Check the affiliate commission (that is, the amount you’ll be earning if it worths promoting).
5. Check the available marketing resources provided by the vendor or product owner.

Market Research: Above is the list of some of the available products you can promote as an affiliate. There are four(4) important columns which are (Product, Product type, price and commission). We’re much concerned about the product, price and commission.

Disclaimer: I don’t know any of these products owner and I earn nothing from them by writing about them. I’m only writing about them randomly to teach you and ensure you break even in this online space.

Let’s start with the products column. On the first row, we have Stella Publishing Guide selling for $20.85 which is equivalent to N25,000 and the commission is 50%. Meaning, you’d be getting N12,500 on every sale you make. If you make just 10 sales per month, you make N125,000.

Should we start promoting this product? NO! We have to follow the 5 steps listed above. How do we identify the products that are selling very well. On each platform there is one or more symbols. Some have trophies and medal, some have trophies only without a medal. The more symbols a product has, the more it’s selling. So based on this, you can pick your top 10 and pick the one that falls in the middle to promote if:

• You understand what the product is all about and you understand who the target audience are (the consumers i.e people who you think will buy the product). And you are satisfied.
• You are satisfied with the product price and commission.
• And you have checked marketing materials and you feel the product sales page is convincing enough to make you buy if you were to be the prospect.

To check the product sales page and marketing materials, click on the promote button on the last column.

On the product details page, copy your affiliate link and click on the JV page to access the promotion materials such as testimonials and other necessary resources that the vendor or product owner as provided.

What is an affiliate link and what should you do with it?

An affiliate link is a unique link that most times takes you to a sales page of a product or offer and when someone buys the product or pays for the offer through that affiliate link, the owner of that affiliate link gets a commission. Without the affiliate link, there’s no way you can earn a commission unless you can prove to the affiliate company that you brought the buyer. Therefore, your affiliate link is very important.

Now what should you do with the link. The first thing you need to do is visit the link yourself and check the sales or product page if it’s something you can work with. Once you’re satisfied, you can then start the promotion. How do you promote your affiliate link? This leads us to sales funnel and traffic generation.

Before we move to that, let me take you through how to register on expertnaire.

How to register on expertnaire as an affiliate

Go to https://expertnaire.com/manager/affiliate/register
Fill the form and click Register (you should read the terms and conditions too
though)

Once you click REGISTER, the system will show you a popup notification
informing you that the fee for becoming an affiliate on Expertnaire is N10,000 a
year.
Just click the Yes, Continue button to move on. Or click cancel if you are not willing to pay the fee.
When you click the Yes, Continue button, the system will show you the Paystack form for payment. You can use the CARD option or BANK option to pay with Paystack.
Sometimes, the network from your bank might not be good and your payment
might not go through. If that is the case, just try it again later on.

Once your payment goes through, you will get an email and you will get instant
access to the affiliate dashboard.

Adding your bank account:

Once you are signed up as an affiliate, you can log on to the system if you are
logged out using your email address and password you used in signing up.
Just go to https://expertnaire.com/manager/affiliate/login and login
from there.
This will always bring you to your affiliate dashboard where you can see a
summary of your sales e.t.c
The first thing you should do after signing up is to add your bank account
details.
Here is why:
Expertnaire pay affiliates every Friday. But if you do not have your bank account details on your profile, You won’t be able to receive your money.
So, in order to do this, click on your profile picture, it will drop down, then click
on PROFILE.

Then, on the next page, click EDIT MY PROFILE

It will bring you a page that has all your details.
Scroll down until you see the section where you can add your bank account
details.

Ensure you add your bank account details correctly and click on SAVE.
Once you have done that, it is now time to get your affiliate links and start
promoting some products.

Getting your affiliate link:

Again, your affiliate link is your unique link that allows the system to know that a
particular sale came from you so that you are credited for it.
The good thing about the affiliate links on Expertnaire is that they all come with
a 90-day cookie. This also applies to stakecut.
This is what I mean; Let’s say someone clicks on your affiliate link today but does not buy
immediately. Let’s say this person now comes back to the product page 87 days later and
buys, the cookie that the affiliate link set on the person’s browser makes it easy
for the system to identify that this customer was referred by you and you get the
commission. Isn’t that sweet?
Okay, here is how you get your affiliate links.
Once you are logged in, there is a set of links by your right side (either on
desktop or mobile)

The second link on this menu is what you click on to get your affiliate links. When you click on affiliate links on the menu, it takes you to a page where we
have all the various products listed. On this page, you will see details about each product.

•  The product name
•  Product price
•  Commission percentage paid to affiliates
•  And the affiliate link for the product

Something like this.

As you can see in the image above, the blue button circled in red is where you
can get the affiliate link for the product you want to promote.
Again, each product has its own unique affiliate link.
All you have to do is click on the blue button and it will open a box with the
affiliate link for that product.

Then you can simply copy it
For instance, here is an affiliate link for a product on Ecommerce called 10x

The affiliate link is what is circled in red and this is what you are going to be
promoting to prospects.
Again, once people click the affiliate link, it brings them to the sales page for the
product and once they buy, you get an email notification that you have made a
sale.

Now that you understand how to use Stakecut and Expertnaire platforms, let’s now talk about sales funnel, traffic generation. and the system you can use to make your first 2-5 sales.

Sales Funnel and Traffic Generation

Conventionally, there are 6 stages in a sales funnel as illustrated below. But we’ll be discussing here a lay man’s sales funnel.

Elite definition of sales funnel:

The customer journey from awareness to action is represented visually by a sales funnel. Another name for it is a revenue funnel, marketing funnel, or buy funnel. Every sale starts with a number of potential consumers and concludes with a considerably smaller number of people who actually make a purchase, as the funnel indicates.

Lay man’s definition of sales funnel:

A sales funnel is the process of telling somebody about what you’re promoting (awareness), directing them towards the product or offer (Evaluation) , convincing them to buy (Negotiation and Closing). For example, you’re promoting a japa-to-canada course, and you were able to tell 5 people about it, 3 people showed interest and 1 person eventually got the course. These all stages or processes from when you told them about it to when one person paid is called a sales funnel. Therefore, not everybody that enters your funnel will become a buyer. That’s why you need to tell more people about your offer, product, or whatever you’re promoting either as an affiliate or as a product owner yourself. And this leads us to lead or traffic generation.

There are different sales funnel. I mean there are different ways to convert traffic to customers as an affiliate marketer in Nigeria or Africa.

1. T-O: Traffic to Offer. This is just you telling people about your offer and direct them to go and get it if interested i.e giving them your affiliate link.
2. T-I-O: Traffic to Information to Offer. Here, you tell them (The Traffic) about the product, you give them more information about it directly or through an online post or video to convince them better and finally direct them to the offer or sell to them (That is, giving them your affiliate link and when the make the purchase, you earn).
3. T-W-O: Traffic to Whatsapp to Offer. This applies only when you are getting traffic (People to promote your offer to) from social media or any online platform to your whatsapp or Dm, from there you tell them more about the offer and finally give them your affiliate link. I like the method because you get a chance to have their contacts and keep convincing them till they buy.
4. T-LMP-W/E-O: Traffic to Lead-Magnet-Page, to Whatsapp or Email List, and finally to offer: This is the most common and preferred funnel as far as affiliate marketing is concerned in Nigeria. What is a Lead Magnet Page? It’s a page where you direct people to perform or take an action and promise to give them something in return if they take that action, and that something promised is called Lead Magnet while the page is called a Lead Magnet Page

When you view the image above and zoom in, you’ll see an illustration of what I explained. That’s a lead magnet page and the action is to subscribe to an email list and get a book in return, and the book is the lead magnet. One great advantage of this type of sales funnel is that you have the contact details of this people coming into your funnel. So if they don’t buy you have the opportunity to follow up on them or in the future you can promote something different to them. And at that time, they wouldn’t see you as a stranger and it’ll be more easier to get them to buy what you’re selling.

You can apply everything I have explained so far in any business.

Lead / Traffic Generation

The practice of bringing people to a website, or other online platform using marketing tools and styles is known as traffic generation. Although there may be a little difference between traffic and lead generation, but both will be used synonymously in this course.

In a simple term, getting more people to market or promote what you’re selling to is called lead generation. We can also define it as getting more people into your sales funnel.

Lead Generation is categorized into:

1. Organic Traffic
2. Paid Traffic

Organic:

When you get people to your funnel or when you get people to market your product to without paying for advertisement is called Organic traffic. An example of this are:

• Your WhatsApp contact list
• Your Instagram followers
• Your twitter followers
• Your Facebook friends
• A WhatsApp group where you participate
• A targeted Facebook group where you participate
• Your email subscribers
• Your blog traffic

All these are organic traffic. Once you have this category of traffic or leads, what you are going to do is to figure out what the majority of these people in your contact list or followers will be interested in.

The idea is this:
Once you know what they are likely interested in, you can now find a product
that is related to that interest and market it to them
Here is an example for you to understand what I am saying.
Let’s say you have a list of 300 contacts on your WhatsApp list. And out of these 300 contacts, 250 of them are married women.

Being majorly married women, then you can now look through the products on the affiliate platforms that you are convinced they’ll be interested in, and start marketing to them by using any of the sales funnels listed earlier.

For instance, most of the people who follow me on social media are usually
business opportunity seekers and entrepreneurs.
One thing, these must be people who have some money to spend though.
That means they should be people with a job or a business. This will give me an idea of what product to promote.

How to advertise to your organic audience

So by now, you already have an audience to promote to. You know what they are likely interested in, And you now have a product that suits that interest.
The next thing you will be doing is to craft an advert to get people who are
interested to raise up their hands and contact you. It’s just a way to filter out those that are interested from the list of contacts or followers you already have.
So How?
The first method is by making a post or message that says something like:

“Would you like to know how to achieve xyz? Email
abc@yahoo.com or visit xyz.com(landing page) or DM Me (if it is on
whatsapp)” Depending on your type of sales funnel.

Let’s say we want to promote the weight loss product on Expertnaire.
It is always a good idea to check out the sales page of the product so that you
can get some helpful information and tips that can help in your promotion.
So, for the weight loss product on Expertnaire, the sales presentation talks about
something like “how to lose weight with Nigerian foods”

So, you can write an advert that says:
“Would you like to know how to use Nigerian foods to
lose 10kg in 3 weeks? Dm!”

If there is space for an image depending on the medium you are using, then add
a proper image that gets people’s attention.

If your audience are in your email list, you can send them an email that says:
“Hi,
Do you know that honey gets you fat?
Yes, that is true. A lot of people don’t know that
honey actually contains a type of sugar known as
fructose.
So, before you start consuming a lot of honey like many
people ignorantly do, you should ask yourself if you
really want to look slim and sexy.

Note: Many people make this mistake over and over.
Some people will just copy their affiliate link about any product and go around
posting the affiliate link anywhere thinking people will just click on it and go and
buy. Try and stick to one product.

Paid Traffic:

Paid traffic means spending money to gain audience or traffic to market and advertise your products to. This can be achieved by:

• Running Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok, Google Ads
• Paying influencers (People that have organic traffic or large followers) to help you advertise your product to their audience.

Either paid or organic traffic, the main objective is to get as much people as possible into your funnel, i.e advertise your product to (awareness), and eventually make them buy from you.

4 ways to sell to people on Whatsapp;

1. WhatsApp One-on-One Messages,
2. WhatsApp Status,
3. WhatsApp Broadcast Lists,
4. WhatsApp Groups and

Let’s take them one after the other…

One-on-one Message

As the name implies, this is a situation whereby you send messages to your contact
list one on one.

This is not a fast method but the most powerful.

The reason is because you can mention the name of that friend on your contact.

People like people who mention their names. They take it as a personal message.

That is why email and chatbot marketing are some of the most effective forms of
digital marketing. Personalized Marketing is Key.

For now, Whatsapp has not developed that kind of technology that lets you
mention people’s names in a broadcast… I mean, such that everyone would receive

the broadcast in his or her own name. If you see this feature on WhatsApp
tomorrow, don’t be surprised. Just remember you have read it here.

I don’t usually use this method anyways. It takes a lot of time but it really works.

I’ll tell you how I achieved a similar result with broadcast soon. Check the Tip
session.

So, what kind of message do you send here?

Let’s assume the name of your friend is Christianah. By the way, I love that name
😍. It’s one of the sweetest names I know. Don’t ask me why!

You can write something like;

Hello Christianah,

It’s been a while here and I just thought of checking on you.
Please, be fine.

You don’t need to add your name if Christianah already has your number and
knows you.

Imagine you got such a message from someone, won’t you reply? If it’s me, I’ll
reply.

You can then keep up the conversation from there.

Warning: this is not the time to recommend your digital product. Remember to
build a relationship first.

But if Christianah asks you a question like “Sola, what have you been up to?”

I can reply like this “I thank God o. I’ve been developing myself by reading books
and making some cool cash with a particular online platform.”

Only continue talking about the platform if Christianah asks you about it i.e the
online platform.

If she asks, you can say something like
“Please, watch this video to the end and then ask me questions after watching.
[Insert Your Af iliate Link]
The video will expire soon too.”

Most likely, she will watch and then get back to you.

When she gets back to you and says she has watched and asked what next, ask her
“Is it something you can do?”

If she says “yes”. Tell her that she can go get it.

If she says there’s no money, just wish her well.

In case she didn’t watch the video and says it’s too long, tell her that she can’t do
the business without watching to the end.

Don’t explain the video unless she watches it to the end. Do the same for affiliate
products that don’t have a video as pre-sell.

Like I said, this takes more time.

Let’s go to the next method.

WhatsApp Status

In this method, you simply write or upload a photo or video on your status about
your digital product.

A message like the one below might work for you too…

WhatsApp Broadcast List

Create a WhatsApp broadcast list. As at the time of writing this book, the
maximum you can add to your WhatsApp broadcast list is 256. I don’t really know
why.

If you have more than 256 people on your contact, simply create another one. You
can create more.

Start by using the RS Formula I discussed in chapter two.

Give value.

Recommend a product.
Follow up.
Give value again.

Yours can start with a happy new month message, an inspirational quote or
inspiring story.

Tip: When sending broadcasts, ensure you use personalized words. For example,
it’s more powerful when you say “You” than “You all” or “Dear Friend” than
“Dear Friends”.

The point here is to write as if you’re writing to just one person. That’s the way I
achieve something similar to the one-on-one method discussed earlier.

After you’ve built that rapport or relationship, only then should you start sending
promotional broadcast messages. You can see the bonus section of this book for
the exact promotional or sales scripts I used. You don’t have to use them the exact
way I did… just adapt to suit your audience.

One of my mentees said he simply added 50 people (call it an audience research)
he thought would mostly buy the 72 Hour Income Generator from him and added
them to a broadcast list.

He got his first sale in less than 24 hours of sending a promotional message. Again,
I have added his exact first message in the bonus section.

Should you broadcast messages to unknown persons? No way! I don’t advise
that. Make sure you build relationships first. Don’t just collect people’s numbers
and start sending broadcast messages to them. They might report you as spam. If
WhatsApp gets more spam alerts about your number, your number can be blocked.

WhatsApp Groups

This is in two parts and I’ll explain.

One is if you’re the group owner and the other is if you’re not the group owner.

Part A

If you’re the owner, this set of people should have trusted you over time.

All you need do is simply recommend the digital product you’re promoting to
them.

Or…

If you don’t have any existing group yet, create a special group as a pre-sell.

What I mean by pre-sell is this:

Assuming you want to promote the an Income Generator course as a product, you
can organize a FREE class (not the word “FREE”) on How To Make Money
Online or 3 Ways to Make Money Online.

Tip: FREE is a very powerful word in marketing. So, use the power to your
advantage. I call it the Power of FREE.

You can use any topic of your choice. I just used the above as examples.

It could be one day class or two days depending on what you want to teach them.

Make sure you join our telegram channel to get access to class training templates.

Invite people to join the group for the free training. Encourage those who have
joined to share the group link with their friends. Since it’s free, many should join.

During the class, teach them about how to make money online and include
Affiliate marketing as one of the ways to make money online.

I hope you know that Konga, Jumia, etc also have affiliate programs. Their
commissions are way lower though. This is another selling point for you.

You might ask, “why must I teach for free?”

Formula, right? That’s what we are using here. Just ensure you give them massive
value for free.

After the class, you should see some people who will buy the product from you.

If you can still keep up with sharing valuable content to them, you can keep the
group. Once in a while, follow up on them by sharing the digital product you’re
promoting to the group.

The second part of the Whatsapp group method is if you’re not the owner.

If you’re not the owner of the group e.g you belong to a group of your friend,
church, etc.

Don’t just send messages to the group about making money online. Some of them
might think you’re a scam.

Instead, use the RS Formula.

Share interesting stories of making money online without sounding salesy. It takes
some skill to do this.

Or you can simply invite them to your free class. Make sure you inform the owner
or admin of the group before you share it. Some might even post it for you
themselves.

Friends’ WhatsApp

This is just simple. Ask your friends to help you post on their statuses, broadcast or
groups.

Through that, they are transferring instant trust that their friends have for them to
you.

This is best done if you’ve made some sales so you can use as testimonials.

Tip: Testimonials are a great way to sell on Whatsapp. Even if you’ve made one
sale, let people know about it.
If you have not made sales yet, use those of others who have made sales.

Mistakes to avoid

Don’t sell without building relationships. Remember that people must know
you, like you and trust you before they can do business with you.
● Avoid buying people’s numbers and sending messages to them. Send to
those that you know and know you. This will prevent you from being
blocked from WhatsApp.
● Set smart goals. This would really help you to push further.
● Follow up consistently.
● Take permission from owners of groups before sending messages to avoid
being removed or termed a scam.
